The Snake:

A River in Trouble?

During the next three workshop days you and a partner will be taking a careful look at the Snake River to see what should be done about the various issues that have developed in recent years.

This research experience is designed to model Engaged Learning, an approach that has four key elements that your workshop leader will explain:

  1. Students are responsible for much of their own learning
  2. Students are energized
  3. Students explore strategically
  4. Students work collaboratively

You will be role-playing. Imagine that you and your partner are on special assignment to the President of the United States or one of his challengers. At the conclusion of your research you will be expected to present a list of well supported recommendations to President Bush or a challenger. Your most important thinking will be done with mind mapping software - Inspiration™ - and with a word processor to prepare a position paper. You will also provide several slides created with PowerPoint™ to deliver an oral presentation supplementing your essay.

First open your word processor so that you have a file open and ready for note taking. Discuss with your partner what you already know or do not know about the Snake River and write a list on the word processor under the title, "What We Know."

Please do not proceed to the next module until instructed to do so.
